Niagara Reproductive Justice

Donate to the Abortion Support Fund

Since 2023, our Abortion & Reproductive Support Network has been helping clients access abortion. But now, recent federal cuts are putting our work at risk.

As of January 2025, we have helped over 100 clients access abortion. Many of our clients are newcomers, unhoused, and experiencing greater barriers to accessing abortion care.

We provide clients with funding, transportation, care coordination, and referrals.

As a 100% volunteer-run community collective, the majority of our funding comes from individual donations.

Our work is only possible with the help of outside organizations.

In 2024, our parent organization, OPIRG, lost the majority of its funding.

In the first months of 2025, changes to the federal government resulted in two national organizations that subsidized the cost of healthcare for our clients, Action Canada and Abortion Care Canada, experiencing restrictions on their funding.

As a result of these defundings, we are struggling to provide the level of funding needed for our clients to be able to access abortion.

Because we are volunteer-run and do not have a physical location, nearly all of our funding goes directly to support clients.

Our only overhead cost is $21/month that pays for our phone that clients use to reach us.

We never turn away a client for lack of funding and have found ways to be as creative and resourceful as possible.
Through lots of phone calls, research, and on-the-ground work over many years, we have figured out all the tips and tricks and loopholes to getting clients the care they need without very many resources.
We have built relationships with clinics and pharmacies in Niagara, Hamilton, and Toronto who are willing to subsidize the cost of care for our clients.
We have created a Driver Network of vetted and trained volunteers who provide transportation to our clients for free, as far as Toronto and London.
We know which clinics will accept Interim Federal Health Plan (refugee health insurance) and international student insurance so we can direct clients to a clinic that won’t charge them out of pocket.

Clinics often charge a booking fee not covered by OHIP and the cost of a prescription for mifegymiso (the abortion pill) alone can be upward of $400 for uninsured clients.

On average, we spend about $106 per case requiring funding; costs have been kept low because we are able to refer the bigger expenses to the national organizations we work with.

We also like to provide a higher level of care when possible,

doing things like buying a bag of groceries for our clients who are staying at the Niagara Falls hotels as refugees or buying phone minutes for someone who has to travel to Toronto for their procedure and doesn’t have a way to stay in touch while out of WiFi.

We are a team of 14 volunteers.

We are caregivers, parents, students, workers with multiple jobs, and providing abortion care is only part of what we do within our reproductive justice work.

The wider NRJ team also helps distribute free pregnancy test kits, is mapping all of the Niagara pharmacies that provide mifegymiso, monitors and disrupts the local anti-abortion movement, runs skill-building webinars for service providers, and hosts university placement students.
The best way to help make sure our work can keep going is to join our Patreon. One-time donations are also appreciated and can be provided via e-transfer or through our GoFundMe. Tax receipts are available through OPIRG, please email us to learn how to donate if a tax receipt is requested.

Ways to Donate to the Abortion Fund

1. Become an NRJ Patron

Join our Patreon to contribute monthly donations of $2, $5, $10, $15, $20, $26, or $51.

2. Become an OPIRG Patron

OPIRG is our parent organization, without who we could not exist. They are a social justice non-profit that has been operating in Niagara since 1988 and they run programming like the Niagara Free Store, the Anti-Racism Sponsorship Fund, and help Action Groups (like us!) get their start so that activism can thrive in Niagara. They are in need of funding to keep their doors open. You can join their Patreon and select the $20 level "Action Group Supporters," and half of your donation will go to OPIRG and half will go to NRJ!
*Note that despite their name, they are not associated with Brock University.

3. E-transfer niagarareproductivejustice@gmail.com

Important Info:

When you e-transfer NRJ, the account shows up under the name of one of our team members. This is because we are not a registered nonprofit. If you prefer to donate to NRJ directly through OPIRG, which is a registered nonprofit and can provide a charitable tax receipt, you may e-transfer opirgbrockbookkeeper@gmail.com with the purpose of your donation in the message section (make sure you include "NRJ" somewhere in the message). Let us know if you would like a tax receipt by emailing us at niagarareproductivejustice@gmail.com.

Can't e-transfer? Check out our GoFundMe for another way to make a one-time contribution (below).

4. Donate to our GoFundMe

We have a GoFundMe campaign for our abortion support fund! If you'd like to make a one-time donation to support NRJ's work and you can't etransfer, you can donate through our GoFundMe instead.
