For UHIP (University Health Insurance Plan) and DND (Department of National Defence health coverage), it is likely that all costs associated with abortion will be covered; however, you may have to pay out of pocket and then submit for reimbursement.
For IFHP (Interim Federal Health Program for refugees), appointment fees and procedural (also known as surgical) abortion are fully covered, but the abortion pill (also called medical or medication abortion) may not be covered. Check with the clinic first. If you will have to pay out of pocket for the prescription, contact us for support.
For out-of-province insurance, some clinics may accept and others may not. You may have to pay out-of-pocket and submit for reimbursement. Check with the clinic and with your provincial health plan policy.
For GuardMe: Medical and surgical abortion is covered by GuardMe under Section B Pregnancy benefits of the policy only if the pregnancy started within the 30 days prior to the issue date of the plan (Sept 1, Jan 1, May 1 depending on the term that a student starts school). GuardMe uses the date of your last menstrual period (LMP) to determine coverage. If the pregnancy start is too close to the eligibility window, they require a dating ultrasound to confirm. If the pregnancy began 31 days or more prior to the start of coverage, the abortion will not be covered. If this is really confusing to navigate or you need financial support, contact us.
